Serious topic? Not really, but our debate ones go in here now, so meh Razz

Should a woman have to change her last name when she gets married?

Boys, do you want your girl to share your last name?
Gals, do you have an idea what you want to do?

Discuss here.

Changing your name sucks, its up to her, she can keep hers if she wants, wouldn't bother me.

I want to change my surname. I don't like mine all that much, and I don't want my future kids to be teased like I was. But I'll be sad to be losing it at the same time - there isn't anyone who can pass it on in this country, so the name is likely to die out. The only reason I like my surname is because it's mine and my family's.

ah the kids, well because its just the way society does things it would probably end up being my name, but well I guess we'd discuss amongst ourselves and decide which name to give the kids

I'm not changing my name. It has a ring to it.

But as I have just discovered, not even my friends know how to spell it >.>

I wouldn't want to lose my last name. I wouldn't mind if she kept her last name either, but that could lead to other issues like what names the kids would have as Emilia mentioned. I think its simpler and easier if a couple both have the same name, usually by tradition its the girl who changes her name, but now it doesn't really matter anymore. Its fine for anybody to change their name now imo.

Why has it been that the female has to change their name?

I guess back in the early days women were really suppressed and weren't allowed to do anything.

But these days, women are doing awesome things and it should be recognised in their name, so why shouldn't they be able to pass it down?

Also, just for example
If I were not to change my name and I married James (Razz), I probably be still addressed as Mrs Gloyne anyway.

My friend from uni, she uses both her maiden name and her husband's surname on a regular basis. For university she uses her maiden name (so I expect that is still her official name) but for Facebook and for her kid's school purposes she uses her husband's surname. It's confusing Razz

She should have her husband's name in brackets on Facebook. I like that feature.

I would prefer it if my wife were to take my name, as I would be willing to take hers if she asked - it's a symbol of being "together forever" , if you know what I mean. Like a ring, but more significant and permanent.

Plus, I hate hyphenated surnames on kids, it makes the parents' relationship seem so shallow.

So yeah, I'd be willing to take her name if she asked, and I'd hope for the other way around too.

I agree with you completely on the hyphenated names. Names. It looks odd to me.

And for the second one, it's because you are a hopeless romantic Razz

Yeah, its a bit silly if a married couple doesn't get the same last name. It would make some people think that something is wrong. Hyphenating the two last names together is a possible solution, but that would only work if both names are short and go well together.

Haha probably Razz but I just reckon that it signifies a proper relationship. As Turk put it:

"Sure, we'll just have one of those modern relationships in which the people don't love each other".

Or something like that, I can't remember the exact quote.

I think, whether it's the male or female, being willing to change your name is the most sincere sign of love. Imo, of course Razz
