We are here, because it just happened. That is all. There is no reason why we were put here.

The fact we are here randomly means that we should be making the damn most of it.

This pretty much sums it up for me too. I think we were simply born of a beautiful accident - a perfect set of conditions, the only possible result of a previous state, itself the inevitable result of the one before, leading back to the birth of the universe, unintended, unispired. On a more personal level, the meaning of one's life is whatever they desire it to be; the universe gives us no meaning, therefore we must create our own.

Definition of LIFE according to Webster's:

1: the quality that distinguishes a vital and functional being from a dead body

2: a principle or force that is considered to underlie the distinctive quality of animate beings

3: an organismic state characterized by capacity for metabolism, growth, reaction to stimuli, and reproduction

4: the sequence of physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual

5: one or more aspects of the process of living

Well, those are the literal meanings. As to my personal opinion, I do not believe in a metaphysical meaning of life. The only thing that you could technically make the case for is a physical purpose, i.e. the need to reproduce in order to further part of your biological information.

But yeah, I agree with Emilia. The existence of life as we know it is a complete fluke that only occurred because of the infinite qualities of both the universe and time. Life has existed before Earth, and it will exist after Earth. It just is.

I'll leave you with two of my favorite videos on the universe and life in general:

In my opinion, (not to offend those who believe in God), but the only reason religion was created was so people could have answers for everyday things. And they go to these religions to find reason.

Why does the sun exist? It is because it is the god Ra.

We need it to rain! Let's do a rain dance to call the rain gods.

I will join the voices of those before me but i found Richard Dawkins put it quite well by saying (paraphrasing here)just because we can formulate a question in our langue doesn't automatically give it the right to have a response or to be recognized, some questions are not worth answering and don't really need answering, legitimizing them is essentially a waste of time.

I'm not sure that I would go as far as to say that Torchwood. I think it's human nature to try to find the meaning of life - hell, millennia of religion is the perfect example of just that, but I don't believe that trying to justify our own existance is a worthless undertaking. Fruitless perhaps, but not worthless.

Philosophical questions like this show an ingrained desire for knowledge and for validation - something that should never be discouraged. Besides, who knows what we might discover about ourselves if only we looked...
