there are tonnes of things in this world that we don't need, but it doesn't make them meaningless
birthdays have a very good purpose, the busy lives that the majority of westerners live, we often forget to be celebrating life every single day, so when someones birthday comes along, its a little reminder that we are supposed to be celebrating life
i think you mean to say that you see birthdays as unnecessary, thats what you just described to me there, they aren't meaningless because they most certainly have meaning
oh and I just thought of something else
its an occasion that can easily allow every single one of someones friends and family to all be socialising together
as i said, people live busy lives, take us here for example, we're all busy with uni work or otherwise, and probably haven't all hung out for a while, but if emi were to have celebrated with a party, all of us would have tried to be there for her, and as such all of us would have the opportunity to celebrate her life with her, all of her friends while we all socialise together
and that would be a good thing
no we dont need it to all meet up, and no there no real need to have the event, but everyone enjoys it, there is good reason to do it, so why not? birthday celebrations are a good thing, how could they possibly be meaningless
unnecessary perhaps for some, but not meaningless
