Thats... actually less cool than I thought it would be. It makes good business sense though right? And I'll probably end up at least trying it out.

Should be fun for a while at least.

I'd like to see some game footage. A poster means nothing. It is a false representation of the game. Graphics wouldn't be THAT good.

Maybe if they didn't call it dota 2, it would sound better as well.

It's not a remake its suppose to be sequel to the original mod, like Team Fortress 2.

Yeah the artwork isn't in-game or 3D renders but they are pretty awesome, it will be awesome to play in a Spectrum team Very Happy

What's wrong with calling it dota 2 emilia?

They are probably calling it that because Valve got the people who made dota to make a sequel for their company and be patient for some gameplay footage, it will come eventually lmao. derr is merely telling us that there will be a sequel coming, nothing wrong with that, of course the posters are there for advertising purposes.

Me myself, I think that the game will probably turn out to be very good. It should be a lot better than the original anyway because it will no longer be a mod, but a full standalone game, so it will no longer be restricted to the limitations of the game in which it is modding.

Well theres only one person developing and maintaining DotA atm, and thats IceFrog (real name unknown) and he joined Valve last year to lead the team in making DotA.

I think he wanted to keep the original DotA alive for people wanting to still play on the old Warcraft 3 engine for tournaments and such, while this is a full standalone sequel with a better engine.

Some of the features that are mentioned in that article are;
- global lighting and true cloth simulation
- skillbased matchmaking system
- the opportunity for experienced players to help newbies using a coach-system are also planned
- integrated voice chat (no more ventrillo)
- a ton of custom voice work, each hero will have there own amusing lines

I do agree with Emilia, but after reading the announcement, it sounds like its going to be amazing! Can't wait to see it.

I really would have preferred a different name than Dota 2, and I don't mean it needed a new name, just they didn't have to put a 2 after it, they could have given it a title instead, like the way Counter Strike : Source has. No idea what extra word they could have given it, but surely they could come up with something better sounding than Dota 2

Emilia, will you actually try the game? or would that be foolish optimism? Razz

dota 2 sounds like a fine name to me, I don't know what you people have against simple numbers. Me myself, prefer numbers, there is nothing more annoying than trying to work out the order of a series of games or movies when their names have no numbers. Numbers in games are great and there is nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned.

I will agree that numbers prevent confusion concerning multiple sequals.

But I tell you right now. There will likely be no such thing as Dota 3. Unless something radical happens to the state of our technology.

Dota was the same game that was constantly ever changing and updating, Dota 2 will be exactly like that, it will have no sequel, it will be its own sequel as it constantly updates, more like an MMO.

There wouldn't be any confusion between Dota and Dota the Something at all.

Counter-Strike: Source was Counter-Strike remade onto the Source engine not a sequel.
Team Fortress 2 was a sequel to Team Fortress Classic not a remake.

It will be Dota 2 because it is a seperate game and IceFrog is still going to work on DotA, but the original mod was basically just a map and created by someone else, so they want to differ between the versions to avoid conflict with the original creators.

I should mention this in the other DotA thread but Valve copyrighted the names, DotA, DotA 2 AND DotA 3, so there is possibility of a DotA 3 :p

No, I will not try the game. Wrong genre and game style! Yuck!

I HATE sequels having numbers. Doesn't matter what it is (games, movies, albums, etc).
I HATE HATE HATE. It is cheap and uncreative.
Like John said, it needs to have a sub name.

What is absolutely stupid, is when creators give it a number AND a subname.
We aren't stupid, we can tell them apart >.>
Oh wait, Martin can't.
HAHAHAHAHAHA

And yeah, why have a Dota 3? Seriously, it is pretty money hungry and it also suggests that they are going to leave gaps in Dota 2 so they have something left to make Dota 3 better.

Or, they could just do expansion packs or something.

The problem is Valve can't call it 'Defense of the Ancients' because when they tried to file to copyright the name, Riot Games counter-filed because the creators who made DotA Allstars (that now work for Riot Games on League of Legends) because the name should be held by them and to protect DotA for all the modders that worked on it, the only name Valve could use offically was DOTA and since they don't want to confuse people and tarnish the original game it is called DOTA 2.

So Emily, do you HATE Half-Life --->2<--- because it has a big fat 2 at the end? Huh?
And its called DLC Emily.

I know you love Half-Life 2, seems hypocritical to like it but hate games, movies or music that have a sequel that has a 2 in it.

I believe she just meant that she hate's the title, not the stuff themselves... <_<

I agree with her that names are far more creative, but numbers are easier, could you imagine Final Fantasy having a different name for each and every single one?! Tho admittedly their order is actually irrelevant

Yeah, expansion packs are soooo last decade. Still, a game like DOTA (or DotA whatever) certainly has a lot of room to grow. More maps, more items, more heroes, they could do what they want.

And to be honest, I'd like a version of DOTA whereby I could AIM my spells through line of sight. Personally, games with first person feel more hectic and exciting. Can you imagaine seeing the other teams 5 heroes all charging at you with a wave of creeps following? And you can't see if your mates are going to come help? That fear, that drive is what I love in video games!

Moar plz.

While we're discussing numbers, I like sequels with numbers. Can you imagine HL2 as HL:Redux or something?
