James and I visited Perth Zoo yesterday.
Notice the electric fence in this picture?
The wombat was standing at the fence shivering.
It looked really upset.
So I began talking to it.
It walked forward and zapped itself on the fence.
It ran and hid at the back of the enclosure.
It was so upsetting to see, I broke down crying.
It then ran back to see us and we had to walk away to stop it from zapping itself again

We also noticed that it had a bald spot on its nose like it had touched the fence several times before this.
There was no glass, only the electric fence and we have a feeling it has tried to jump it because there is a gym mat in front of the enclosure.

We have sent a complaint to Perth Zoo and I have asked they change the enclosure immediately
Because next time I go to the zoo, I want to see this...

It might be a temporary thing. I went to the zoo a few month ago and saw the wombats, and their enclosure was enclosed by glass. So they might have had some problems with the fence or whatever and put in this temporary fence while they're waiting to get it fixed.

Yeah, that's what I asked them, but it's still not right. They should just close it down for a while.

But the wombat still needs to live somewhere. It's not good that he's hurting himself on the wire, but I don't know how comprehensive the hidden enclosures for that part of the zoo are. I expect they've only got the vet enclosures, which would be small so the sick animals are forced to rest.

I would also expect that the electric fence hasn't been there long, if he's not yet worked out that it hurts when he touches it. Wombats aren't stupid animals, they're certainly smarter than cows who learn about their electric fences quite quickly. As soon as he learns not to touch the fence, his nose will heal and it'll be better.

They move the animals to other enclosures all the time. Like, the lions are with the tiger enclosures at the moment.

There is something mentally wrong with the wombat. It is very obvious that it wants to escape. The fence is just making it so much worse. They could block him off from the fence and put something big there. People won't be able to see the wombat, but who cares? I'd rather it had a safer home than it touching the fence at the expense of people's entertainment.

That is pretty much your fault, theyve become custom to human interaction by being at the zoo, so you doing that made it run into that.
however, the wombat is slightly fckd in the head, as it hasnt learnt that the sparkles hurt the nose.

That is pretty funny aswell XD

If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it.

No, it's not my fault. If you saw what the wombat was like as you were walking in, a part of you would feel sorry for it.

Least I give a damn.

I do care about the poor wombat emilia and I agree with you that they shouldn't have an electric fence, but mini has a point. The wombat should learn not to walk into the electric fence after walking into it once, it is its own fault that it is hurting itself. The bad thing is that animals are even kept in zoos, if it were up to me animals would be left in the wild, but as us humans are a sick demented race, we like to hunt and kill animals and display them as trophies as such, destroying their habitats with deforestation and oil spills and putting them in cages so that we can have a good look at them. As that guy said in The Matrix, our race is a virus, spreading all over this Earth destroying the environment as it was and he had a point, so an electric fence is really hardly a problem. At least they are being looked after decently and the zoo doesn't have bears in tiny cages where they can hardly move lmao and the zoo obviously wouldn't be putting up the electric fence on purpose to torture the animal, they must have a reason for it. I may seem harsh, but I am just saying it how I see it.

Yeah, I'm more or less with Martin.

Except that zoos are for more than just human entertainment these days. Perth Zoo has all these breeding programs for endangered animals to try and increase numbers. The goal is to breed a whole heap and release them back into the wild I think.

However I think the elephants need a bigger enclosure, and the tiger. They keep doing repetitive behaviours because they're bored.

I got a reply from Perth Zoo.

The wombat's name is Zeus and he is 11 years old. He was rescued when his mother was hit by a car Sad

Zeus has raised two babies with a wombat named Cherub.

They have told me that Zeus doesn't normally stay in this enclosure, but has been put here to breed with Cherub.

The grazes on its nose is from fighting with Cherub (Funny that).
The electric fence has been put there to stop him from escaping whilst he is in that enclosure.

They also tell me that there hasn't been a glass panelling there before.
They are considering different barrier options. In the meantime, they have put up a temporary panel fence.

I don't think it is a good enough reason. If they made the enclosure properly in the first place, we wouldn't have this problem.
