Having more clothing on would be worse - once the clothing gets soaked with the freezing water (which would be almost instant), you'd just be freezing and twice as heavy as you usually are.

The door wouldn't have supported both of them, and Jack seemed fairly happy to give it to her instead of pushing her of and taking it for himself. What a gentleman.
