About
Through the Shaanti project, we are introducing a new product to the packaging industry. Our product is unique in that it comes with zero environmental burden and with each bag purchased comes a positive social impact.

Mission
Through the Shaanti project, we are attempting to introduce a new product to the packaging industry. Our product is unique in that it comes with zero environmental burden and with each bag purchased comes a positive social impact.

Company Overview
We are a group of highly motivated students who are passionate about leaving this planet in a better condition than we found it. We think that through The Shaanti Project we will not only be able to reduce the consumption of plastic bags (reusable and non-reusable) but we can also make a difference in peoples lives. In a nutshell, this not just a green project but a project that will also empower people who are begging for a hand up, not a hand out.

Description
Apart from the projects green credentials, at its heart the project seeks to break down barriers of social isolation as well as break the reoccurring nature of the poverty cycle.

Our reusable Jute Bags are made in Kolkata , India by women who have previously worked in the sex trade. We have partnered with an outstanding organisation called Freeset who work with us to empower the women of Kolkata. Many of the women are trafficked from Bangladesh, Nepal and rural India with the promise of full time work or an education. For others poverty has left them without options. The cries of their hungry children drive them to sell their body. The Shaanti Project not only helps to give these women meaningful employment, whose wage is double than what they could receive elsewhere, but we help educate them, and their families. The purchase of our bags also goes to provide these ladies with a comprehensive healthcare plan and superannuation. Although we take most of these things for granted, they will allow the women to send their children to school, and then university, it will allow them to have access to credit, it will enable them to afford some basic luxuries like electricity and new blankets and will ultimately enable them to lift themselves and their families out of poverty for good.

The bags are screen printed in Western Australia with the help of people with disabilities. By purchasing one of our bags you are allowing people to be reintegrated back into society through the provision of employment that they can be proud of. We don't stop there though, whilst working to make sure the bag's prints are of the highest possible quality, our employees will be trained so that they will be able to attain nationally accreditated certificates in graphic design. We hope that through the provision of certified training, The Shaanti Project will do its part in reducing the barriers that people with a disability face in attaining work in the future.

If you would like to ask a question about our project and/or get involved feel free to post on our wall and we would love to have you on board.

Love,

The Shaanti Project Team
General information
The Shaanti Project is one of the projects that is run by the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) group at the University of Western Australia.

SIFE UWA is a team of students at The University of Western Australia dedicated to making a difference in their community.

SIFE UWA is a non-profit student organisation that aims to empower local communities by improving their quality of life through entrepreneurial and educational outreach projects. Throughout the year, we run projects targeting the most pressing issues facing our community. Our projects address issues such as financial literacy, childhood obesity, family business succession, corporate social responsibility, environmental sustainability and community disadvantage.

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are a global, non-for-profit organization that operates through volunteer membership of university students throughout the world. The global mission of the SIFE organization is to, “bring together the top leaders of today and tomorrow to create a better and more sustainable world through the positive power of business”. The SIFE organization globally has 57,000 student members that are operating 6500 community-based projects and have donated over 5,700,000 volunteer hours to help create sustainable social, environmental and economic change throughout the world.

SIFE works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Participating students form teams on their university campuses and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. An annual series of regional and national competitions provides a forum for teams to present the results of their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. National champion teams advance to the prestigious SIFE World Cup. In addition to the community aspect of the program, SIFE’s leadership and career initiatives create meaningful opportunities for learning and exchange among the participants as well as the placement of students and alumni with companies in search of emerging talent

The SIFE UWA team is a consecutive three time national champions and are the only Australian team to achieve such a feat. The SIFE UWA team is made up of high caliber students who take pleasure in using their skills and capabilities to not only advance their own cause, but the cause of others. The SIFE UWA team currently has projects involved in microfinance, financial literacy, aboriginal economic independence and carbon footprint educational programs.
