Where Were You? 390px-September_14_2001_Ground_Zero_02

Tomorrow is the 10th Anniversary of the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people, including 11 Australians.

This is one of the saddest days in American history and has affected the whole world in one way or another.

Where were you when you heard about the attacks?

Was it not like at 1am Australian time? That was my recollection. Live, anyways. I was woken up by my parents.

I just saw it on tv like everybody else when it happened. I remember that I didn't really care much about it at the time, mainly because it was happening on the other side of the world and I was 11 years old at the time. I didn't really understand it either. I remember the first thing that came to my mind was that Americans must be real idiots to fly aircraft into their own buildings and I was also thinking that America must have really tall buildings. I didn't discover until much later that it was a terrorist attack, so it didn't really mean anything to me at the time and I hardly thought about it.

It wasn't until I saw the films about the 9/11 attacks much later on when I really realised what had happened and had comprehended it all properly. The movies 9/11 and United 93 are actually quite good films, I recommend them to anybody who hasn't seen them. 9/11 is a documentary film with live footage following some of the firefighters that had to deal with the buildings with footage inside the Twin Towers during that day. United 93 is a real time account of the events on United Flight 93, one of the planes hijacked on 9/11, this movie especially moved me, I think I shed a tear when I first watched it during that moment near the end where all of the passengers on the plane realised that their end was near. Its a really sad feeling to know that death is coming and most of us will probably experience it by the end.

My friend's Dad had passed away and I was up all night crying. Mum was with me trying to sooth me, so she went to turn on my radio to put some nice music on. Instead, we heard the report about the terrorist attacks.

The next morning, the TV was brought into the classroom and we watched all of the news footage. It was a very sad day at school, like James said.

On the first anniversary, I watched the documentary about United Airlines Flight 93 and I remember being so scared, that I fell asleep crying again.

This year, I read a true story about a woman who was in the lobby of one of the buildings and a giant fireball came through and burnt a huge percentage of her body. Her husband starting writing emails to all of the family and friends about her long recovery and how the patients around her were dying. The book is called "Love, Greg & Lauren" and it is a collection of those emails.

I was watching Rove Live, Rove had just started his monologue which started at 9PM, and the message came across the bottom of the screen saying a plane had hit the World Trade Center.

The next minute it cut to New York with a gaping big hole in the northern tower, and then out of the edge of the screen we saw the second plane come into view and hit the southern tower.

We were talking about the next day in class, the teacher explaining what had happened.
