Seeing as no one has started off this debate, I am going to extend the debate for another week.

I know a lot of you are very busy at the moment and some of you did not get the opportunity to sign up.

If anyone would like to sign up to be in this debate, please put your name down on the sign up sheet and you will automatically be updated to start debating.

Teams are going to be uneven, but, I know some of you have gone away on holiday and the like.

Teams with less people will not be penalised. Only the people who actually debate will get experience points.

As no one from the Affirmative Team has started off the debate, I am giving the opportunity for anyone to start it off. This is a great topic! Get involved and have some fun!

The death penalty should not be brought back because it is a denial of human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the U.N. in 1948, proclaims the right of every individual to protection from deprivation of life. It states that no one shall be subjected to cruel or degrading punishment. The death penalty violates this fundamental right to live. It is the ultimate inhuman punishment and has no place in a modern criminal justice system. Over two-thirds of countries in the world have now abolished the death penalty in law or practice because of this and if Australia would bring the death penalty back it would be a step-back in the development of our society. We are not animals who kill people in revenge for the misdeeds that they have done, we are a civilised society that will punish people fairly and give everyone the opportunity to redeem themselves. By bringing back the death penalty, we are only sinking to the same level as the criminals who have done these disastrous things.

Emilia, since no one is posting, can you put me on the affirmative team so I can debate?

I can't. James, Martin and Hayden are not here. You are the only person on this team now. I am going to keep this topic as long as possible until the debate actually gets going.

We need to get the debate to start up again!

I want this topic to continue on, seeing as it was one of the suggestions you guys made.

If people haven't signed up and they want to talk in this debate, please feel free.

Comments/thoughts anyone?

I think the death penalty should come back and I will state my reasons accordingly...

1. It will be a deterrent for people that are going to be committing such brutal crimes that advocate the death penalty.

2. It will stop prison overcrowding, with people who have committed such deplorable crime that earns them a life sentence can be dealt with immediately instead of being left to rot for the rest of there lives.

3. If a dog attacks someone or kills someone, it is unfit to live, it should be they same with humans, if they took a life than they must be put down.

I think I agree with The Derr Man entirely

I agree with the derr man entirely as well, I just said those things before because I was put on the negative team, but no one is doing this debate anyway, so it doesn't really matter anymore...

Maybe Emilia should start another debate, if enough people are willing to do it, but it would just be stupid if people say that they are going to do it and then they don't post anything like what happened for this debate lmao. So, if you really want to be in future debates, then say here and maybe we can start one up again.

I really enjoy debating. If Emilia is up for it, I'll join in.

As for the death penalty, I don't really have an opinion - I don't really care all that much. Criminology isn't something that interests me.

An interesting fact though - in Fremantle prison there is a chapel, and it has the 10 Commandments on the wall. Instead of Do Not Kill, it says Do Not Murder, which the prison people changed because the death penalty was in effect when it was written.

That's fine, religion doesn't really matter when it comes to the death penalty, this is more about what is right. Not about what religion tells us to do. The law was never meant to be governed by any religion, it is just meant to be fair and just, so religion really doesn't matter for this.

Oh I wasn't saying that law should be governed by religion, I'm not saying that at all. It was just something interesting is all.
