Alright, since I'm Italian...I'm going to let you guys in on a little secret or not so secret tip (I'm not sure)....I use the the side of the dish's concave curvature to twirl my spaghetti into a nice ball around my fork. Gets the job done just as a spoon would.
But yeah, my Dad, and several others in my family like to use a spoon...but I usually only see that when we're out at a restaurant. Guess its an etiquette/neatness thing.
I never eat spaghetti at a restaurant, so I've never used a spoon. Mainly because me myself also being in an Italian family, we have pasta and spaghetti dishes almost every night. So, if I'm going to go to a restaurant I get something that I don't have all the time at home.
That as well, but I usually have np eating spaghetti, the worst that would happen for me is that maybe I would get a bit of sauce on my chin - nothing a napkin can't fix, I guess not being messy with spaghetti is from me eating it so much.
