Men at Work are being sued by the people who wrote the song "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree" because they stole the tune to use in the song "Land Down Under"

I think the song sounds a little similar, but to say the whole tune was stolen is complete rubbish.
I'm watching on TV and they are showing people how it is stolen...singing the lyrics to Kookaburra to Land Down Under". It fits, but that is also what they call A MASH UP. You can do that with any 2 songs.

There is this song done by a comedy band and they show how about 30 songs use the same set of chords, which was originally used by another band a long time ago. Are they going to start sueing? (If anyone knows about this video, can they post it up. I'm capped "P)

There is a difference with all these songs though - if you were to play them at the same time it wouldn't sound good. A lot of them will be in different keys, but the point still stands.

It's the same in jazz too - there is a particular type of jazz called the 12 bar blues, and every single song is made up of just three chords. It's actually one of the most popular chord progressions in pop music. It's incredibly easy to play too, I love it

But seriously, it'd be impossible to have every single song having a different chord progression - there are only so many nice sounding combinations you can have.

Yeah, you have the 12 bar blues, the ice cream chords, there's heaps of common chord progressions that are shared between songs. But in this one, the melody seems very similar as well, and if I were the person who wrote the original I'd be thinking 'hang on, that's my song!' as well. I don't think it's so extreme that you'd sue but. There are worse ones that deserve sueage, like Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" vs both Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly" and Cat Stevens' "Foreigner Suite" (end part)

every D n B song ever made uses the same underlying beat of drums all the way through. and they dont go sue eachother
