The SKA planning to be built in Australia. It will be a square kilometer array of satellite dishes 12m in diameter. It is predicted that in the first six hours of operation, it will collect more information about astronomy then humans have throughout our entire history. The computer power needed for such a gigantic task, hasn't even been invented yet, but by judging how computers are developing; what will be needed should be around when it's needed.

It's been in the news a fair bit. And it's pretty major. Google it and you'll find hundreds of sites on it, THIS is also the official site. My brother is going to be studying astrophysics next year, and he is really into all that stuff; so he has told me heaps about it.

Why?

Its a multi nation agreement to build it, Australia was picked because the southern Hemisphere gives the best view of our galaxy (The Milky Way), South Africa was also being considered, but Australia was chosen.
And for people, the thirst for knowledge can never be quenched. For as long as we have existed, we have gazed into the stars wondering, questioning, hopefully, this will answer some questions. As well as giving some ridiculously high resolution snaps of our neck of the woods.

Australia was chosen over South Africa because we're awesome. And because we can build it in the middle of absolute nowhere and save money by having minimal security.

Ah, I do not believe the location of the SKA has been decided upon yet. It is still between South Africa and Western Australia, with the final decision at least 1 year away.
